Live at the Britt DVD

Give 'er a Watch (Youtube)

The Ranch Hands recommend this DVD because it is a stunningly beautiful piece of work. We find so many filmed concerts to be boring and too long. Did we mention boring? Not the Britt, however. You might be thinking we're prejudiced because we work for him, but think about this: each of us has seen this concert DOZENS of times (some of us were even at the actual concert), and we still enjoy watching it. Nez does a great job singing all his best songs in a gorgeous outdoor theatre in Oregon. And, oh the band! First call studio cats who don't miss a beat. This is a must-have for your DVD library.

It's Opening Night on the 30th Anniversary of the historic Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon. From the opening bars Nez and the band delight the audience under the stars with many of his old classics, from Joanne to Silver Moon, Different Drum to Shelley's Blues, as well as music from the, at that time, new "...tropical campfire's..." album, Moon over the Rio Grande, Laugh Kills Lonesome and others. This was the only live concert with Nez and the band that recorded "...tropical campfires... ", Red Rhodes, John Hobbs, Joe Chemay, John Jorgensen and Luis Conte. Nez thinks it's his best live version of Rio ever with wonderful guitar work from Jorgy. Beautifully produced and taped, with the sound recorded, not just mixed, for Dolby Surround.

The music videos on the cassette represent about five years of work, going back to the very first one, "Rio," which we created in 1977. I say "we" because these videos are really a collective effort by myself and my good friends Bill Dear and Bill Martin. Over the years the videos were released in scattered form on TV and video cassette. Due to repeated requests, however, I have assembled them all on this one tape. There has been some talk of these music videos being the first of their kind. True, our creative endeavours did begin at the start of the "new" music video's popularity, but that was more our good fortune than our design. In reality, the form dates back to the early days of film and has flourished since, especially during the era of the Hollywood musical, and later with Walt Disney in Saludos Amigos and Fantasia. The two Bills and I have gone our separate ways but the work we did then has blessed me greatly. As I watch these videos, all spruced up with their new digital re-mixed stereo tracks, I can't help feeling like I'm at a family reunion. It's good to see them all together again.

Television Parts Home Companion FAQ

Q: Was this DVD digitally remastered?

A: The original material is 1 inch videotape, and that's what we digitized. It is only a little better quality than VHS, but that is as good as it is going to get given the original format.

Q: Have parts of this DVD been edited?

A: Yes, Nez edited the beginnings of some of the music videos. He made the edits because he didn't like the material. It was material he was forced to include in the TV show and never wanted in the first place.

Q: Is there any additional material on this DVD?

A: No, Nez made the decision not to comment on the DVD because, after having done several, he finds them annoying. He has decided not to do any more commentaries in the future. We didn't add other material to the DVD because there is none to add. This is the reason the DVD is priced so low.

"My all-time favorite motorcycle movie. Better than Easy Rider. Awesome riding sequences." -- Aerostich/RiderWearhouse, the coolest motorcycle outfitter around

While Timerider may not have won any awards it was a rollicking good time from a wacked out screenplay from Nez and Bill Dear. "Time travel smells like broccoli"? You bet. Fred Ward is Lyle Swann, an off road motorcycle racer who gets tossed back a hundred years into the Baja. All he's got is his motorcycle and a map from an Exxon station. Nez wrote and recorded all the music with help from longtime friend John Hobbs, and was the executive producer (read "paid the bills") of this near-first feature for Dear. Dear's first? "Northville Cemetery Massacre". Nope. We haven't got that one, but you'll like this one. In the words of Lyle Swann ... "Who the hell ARE you people?"

Lot's of DVD extras including a commentary by director Bill Deere.
